Georgie and her team have been Inglewood business locals since 2006. After being on the corner of Normanby and Beaufort, she has grown her business and team up in the place she fell in love with all those years ago. Hello, I am Georgie, owner of Etain. I’m a massage therapist, reflexologist and creative who jumped into owning my own beauty salon back in 2006. Having a passion for whole body health, I felt combing beauty treatments with holistic therapies was a match made in heaven.
What is the business about? Etain skin-health-body began in April 2006, I remember the day like it was yesterday. Etain became a beauty, body and hair salon with a mission to make all treatments accessible to everyone. I believe the power of touch is an amazing tool to assist everyone and anyone.
What is unique about your business? I believe we have always been unique as we have continued to grow and evolve with the needs of our clients and community. I never like being the same and always felt that every business needs to stand out from the crowd so with every decision made on whatever treatments we do or brands we stock the research is so very important. At present I am so very proud to say that we are a fully Sustainable Salon, that carries Organic or Natural brands that we truly believe give back to the community.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Just having a passion to assist the body to self-heal with the help of complementary therapies and combining that with beauty allows you to meet so many people and assist them however they need at that time in their lives.
Tell us about yourself – what is your background? I’m originally from East London and began my journey into complementary therapy when I trained as a Reflexologist many moons ago. I then got the bug for learning and went onto train as a holistic massage therapist, which led me to LaStone therapy (hot and cold stone massage). I loved it so much I went on to train as an Instructor in the UK and America. I brought LaStone Therapy to Australia in Feb 2004. From there I taught all over Australia in Spas, Colleges, Salons and The Dermal Institute. I still teach today by request and love it with a passion.
Why Inglewood and what were the reasons for choosing this area? I was lucky enough to teach LaStone Therapy in Inglewood and totally fell in love with the area. Inglewood felt like a second home. I fell in love with the character houses and tree lined streets.
Can you describe your customers? Our customers are the most beautiful people and we all love coming to work and catching up on their next adventures or just chatting about the family. We have made some great friends and they have followed us on our journeys and we love following them on theirs. From finding their first job, getting married, having families and to now cutting their child’s hair, they are all a real joy to know.
What gets you out of bed in the morning? My passion to continually grow as a person, learn new things, make new friends and live life to the full. I suffer from anxiety which at different stages in my life have left me quite incapacitated so when things are good, I take full advantage of life by stepping outside, taking that breath, and enjoying the freedom we take for granted.
What does a typical day look like for you? That’s a good one. I am at present helping my husband in his business, running Etain and Studying Cosmetic Science, so each day can be very different.
Funniest/most memorable client request? I think being a massage therapist when I started out led me to become quite used to some very weird requests, I bet you can all guess what they were.
What’s the most rewarding thing about running your own business? The most rewarding thing is working with all the amazing therapists and stylist I have met over the years of owning Etain. Etain would not exist without them, we have always been a real team and I am so proud of them all. I love being part of their lives and have watched them grow, get married and now have families, it’s just awesome… At present there is Sarah, Jessica, Kate and Stephanie and I adore them all and feel extremely lucky to have them all in my life.
What’s the smartest thing you did for the first year? I can’t say I did anything smart in my first year, I was very green and had no idea how to run a business. I was a massage/complementary therapist who just wanted to help people feel great. I have learnt on the go and made many mistakes.
Best thing about working in Inglewood? Being amongst some amazing small businesses and the Inglewood Community.
Favourite coffee haunt?! Sugar and Nice, Marnee and her team are just awesome. Any excuse for a chai latte and a cinnamon scroll and I’m there…
Guilty pleasure? Dark Chocolate, just love the richness of flavour and it goes so well with my favourite fruit Raspberries.
Say whaaaat?! A concept store that promotes conscious shopping, positive body image and community driven living? Of course we wanted to find out about the incredibly fierce ladies behind Favourite Daughter.
So, we dragged Scout and Finn away from ‘Say Yes To The Dress’ for 10 minutes to give us the low-down on what it’s like running their new store, Favourite Daughter.
What is the business about?
Favourite Daughter is the creation and collaboration of sisters Scout and Finlay Rayner. Favourite Daughter is a family owned and managed Activewear, Wellness and Lifestyle Boutique. The aim of our business is to design a place to promote conscious consumerism, sustainable living and positive relationships between ones self and their communities.
What is unique about your business?
Favourite Daughter combines activewear, lifestyle and wellness into one place. Our uniqueness lies in our encouragement of sustainable and community driven living. Sustainability and work ethics are important to us, so we seek as much as possible to use brands that embrace our philosophy and ideology.
How did you get your concept for the business?
Inglewood is a growing community hub, with a growing selection of fitness, yoga and pilates centres. We love working out and wearing activewear, but we found there is a lack of activewear available in our area. With our customer base having to rely on online shopping or driving to the other side of Perth we felt there was definitely a niche for what we offer. We are also super conscious of what skincare products we use and this is where the wellness side comes in.
We were inspired to create a space to combine these passions and therefore Favourite Daughter only stocks cruelty free, organic and chemical free skincare products. And coupled with our hand selected pieces we are hoping our customers will curate a wardrobe full of consciously consumed pieces which have been bought and handled with care and love while simultaneously building the culture and vibe of our Inglewood community.
How did you decide on your brand name ‘Favourite Daughter’?
Well, our parents café, Finlay and Sons (across the road) is named after Finlay, so she gets asked a lot if she is the favourite daughter. We also get asked a lot if the next cafe will be named after Scout or our little sister Harper and when we started this venture we sat around joking, “are we going to call this one after the favourite daughter”. And well, that’s it.
Why Inglewood? What’s your story, tell us about yourselves?
Why not Inglewood!? You may have seen us around at Finlay and Sons, we have been in Inglewood for four years now and we love the incredible atmosphere of the community! A huge passion for the both of us is the growing lack of connectedness within “modern” neighbourhoods. Through Finlay and Sons, and now Favourite Daughter, we wish to extend the growing Inglewood Beaufort Street strip to create a hub for the community. There is a great energy in Inglewood with the creation of many new businesses in a range of fields so it is very exciting to be able to contribute to that.
Describe your ideal customer?
It is critical to our ethos and business concept that our store and products are inclusive. Our ideal customer covers a wide age bracket with pricing inclusive to both younger and more mature customers. The selection of our brands has been centred on the idea of promoting body positivity so you will find a wide range of sizes to fit all bodies in new and innovative styles and designs. Currently we will have only women’s products because we believe it’s important to create a safe space for women to feel confident and free from the male gaze. Don’t worry guys there could be a potential Favourite Son in the future!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Coffee at Finlay’s. Coffee at Finlay’s. Coffee at Finlays. But also the idea that we can go to work and help people better their lives by feeling confident, strong and beautiful. A hugely motivating aspect is through stocking sustainable products and promoting conscious consumerism we hope to create a more meaningful shopping experience.
All the skin care and wellness products that will be stocked are vegan, cruelty free, organic and with recycled packaging. By selecting only these products we wish to contribute to the reduction of harmful chemicals that are prevalent in the industry and instead promote natural wellness based products.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Scout: At the moment it’s a workout in the morning, a business meeting and coffee at Finlay’s and then the workday starts at Favourite Daughter. I love days when we get new products in and we put them into our system. Little Harper has been the best help! She unboxes things, organises them into sizes and then scans them for me while I enter the data into the system. Sorry Finn, but she does a better job than you!
Finlay: hahaha that’s fine, she does a good job. I’m also at uni at the moment studying Arts and Commerce, so most of my work gets done in the afternoon and I found working out at night is best for me. We do love working out together but our schedules at the moment don’t completely match up.
Most memorable facepalm moment?
Scout: Hitting myself in the face with a resistance band because I didn’t wrap it around my foot properly. Yes, I 100% cried.
What’s the most rewarding thing about running your own business?
The most rewarding aspect so far has been the ability to be creative and to work together as a family to make our vision come true.
What’s the smartest business hack you use?!
Use your community! The people we have met so far have helped us so much! From showing us the ins and outs of the fashion industry, helping us decide the best software and connecting us to more people.
Favourite coffee haunt?
Shoutout to Finlay and Sons no 917 (obviously). All business meetings are taken exclusively there. Even when we aren’t working we are there for an iced long black and soldier eggs.
CHOCOLATE ALMONDS and watching ‘Say Yes To the Dress’. Will she go with the sweetheart neckline or the a-line fit and flare!? Will her mum not like it? Will this episode make us cry? Such suspense!

And it’s all about making sure you have everything to prove you are claiming the right tax. She writes: “A consistent theme this year is the over claiming of expenses and under reporting of income. With the Australian Taxation Office getting more sophisticated in its data matching, taxpayers can expect greater scrutiny. To claim a deduction, you need to have incurred the expense, with a record proving you incurred the expense and it relates directly to your work. This also means ensuring that you only claim the work-related part of items you use personally, such as mobile phones and internet services.”
What’s new in Superannuation?
This is the first year of new measures that enable people who have been out of the work force to top up their superannuation. If you have: • A total superannuation balance below $500,000 as at 30 June; and • Not utilized your entire concessional contributions cap ($25,000) for the year.
Then you can ‘carry forward’ the unused amount on a rolling 5 year basis.
What’s new in Business?
Donna explains: “Single touch payroll (STP) reporting has changed the way businesses report salary and wages, PAYG withholding and superannuation contribution information to the ATO. From 1 July 2019, all business will need to use STP although there is some leniency for micro businesses struggling with implementation.”

Ever since we caught wind of a new business opening up the northern end of Beaufort Street, we were curious. The shop – one of the cutest shop fronts going – was always a shame being empty. Then, over the course of a weekend in April, it was PINK with beautiful black Art Deco features, we took a little bit more notice and decided to see just who this little pink shop belonged to. Inglewood, meet Kenjai from Kustom Klaws…
1// How long have you been in business?
Not long! Officially only 12 months. We’ve been running out of a beauty salon in Claremont for the last year and now it’s time for us to spread our wings and fly! In our short 12 months in business, we’ve quickly established ourselves as a multi-award winning, boutique salon.
2// Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
A lot of my clients know me from my time as a burlesque performer. I’m an international, multi-award winning burlesque performer. Until last year I was quite an active performer and have toured the world performing burlesque. Business life has kept me too busy for the stage, but I’m making a sneaky come back…. in fact, people can catch me in June, I’m one of the top 8 finalists competing for the Miss Burlesque WA State final at the Astor Theatre! But by day… I was a sad little public servant until 2017 when I was made redundant. I took it as a sign from the heavens and decided to throw caution to the wind and follow my dreams to have my own little shop. I studied nights at the beauty academy and worked really hard. It’s been fun, exciting and terrifying, but I wouldn’t change a thing!
3// What’s your business story?
I really love pretty nails and wanted to create a special little business that combines rad nails, with amazing service at a high quality. I think of our salon as a “sanctuary for women”, a pretty little space where they can escape the everyday stresses of work, life, kids or anything else. They can just come, relax, have a gossip, vent about their problems, laugh and then leave with rad nails! Our clients love the hang out, as much as they do the nails.
4// Why Inglewood?
There was never any question about it! I’m an Inglewoodian, born and raised. I grew up all along Beaufort St, went to school at Inglewood primary and Mt Lawley high, and I own my apartment on Beaufort St. I love Beaufort St and Inglewood in general. So it was really important to me to bring my little boutique salon here. I wanted to be part of the local culture and help contribute to the local economy. I’m so proud to be a Beaufort St homeowner and now a Beaufort St business owner too!
5// Can you describe your customers?
I’m what you’d call a “destination shop”, my clients come from all over Perth. From Rockingham to Yanchep and everywhere in between. We service women of all walks of life, all ages and styles. Because we do everything from simple mani’s to big crazy blingy acrylics, we really do have a diverse client base.
6// What gets you out of bed in the morning?
I believe in my little empire, I adore my clients and I love my job. I never have those days where I dread getting out of bed. I’m so blessed to be able to do what I do!
7// How do you advertise your business?
On the socials! Most of our advertising goes through social media. Instagram is where we really buzz because clients can see our work. Check out Kustom Klaws for yourself people – it will brighten up your daily scroll
8// What does a typical day look like for you?
Nails, nails, nails! Everything from simple mani’s to blinged out crazy acrylics. We do it all. I do nails 6 days per week and behind the scenes business stuff 7 days a week. Building an empire never ends.
9// Most memorable facepalm moment?
Oh man… so many… perhaps one of the most recent was when I started painting our new shop. I got half way up the walls when it dawned on me… “oh how am I going to paint up these 4 meter high ceilings!!”. It never crossed my mind. Anyway painting was delayed until the scaffolding came in… I don’t know how I overlooked that! So our shop was half painted for a couple weeks until we got that organised!
10// What’s the most rewarding thing about running your own business?
I get to do what I love every day. Life never feels like a chore and I’m so grateful for that! I love that we can positively impact a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. They always walk out with a little extra sass in their step!
11// What’s the most surprising thing about running your own business?
How little I actually knew about running my own business… I guess you don’t always know what running your own business actually means until you’re deep in it. I’ve had to work really hard at not only becoming an amazing nail stylist but also becoming a strong business woman. I feel like I’ve still got a long way to go before I’m truly queen of my empire, but I’m still learning and pushing myself every day.
12// What’s the smartest thing you did for the first year of your business?
I took every learning opportunity I could. I went to every business course, summit, expo everything! Never stopped learning and trying to improve. Everything I’ve been to, has helped me in some way. I’m still new to business and still just figuring it out as I go.

14// Who is your role model(s)?
Lydia Kypros who owns Bronze Bombshell Beauty – the salon that I’ve been running my business out of the last 12 months. Lydia really embodies what a fantastic business owner and leader should be. I really didn’t realise how much she would influence me during my time there. When faced with decisions, I often think “what would Lydia do?”. I feel like if I can be half the leader she is to her team, then I’ll be doing ok.
15// Favourite coffee haunt?!
Betty and Dave’s!, its right next to my apartment so I can be frequently found loitering there. But also our neighbours at Chef and Co, have kept us caffeined up during salon renovations.

17// Your building is pretty amazing, was that a factor of moving in?
It ticked a lot of boxes for me. The location was right and the building was beautiful. Our salon is largely influenced by vintage styling so this little art deco shop is perfect for us. It’s how I always pictured our shop would be!
Kustom Klaws opened on May 1st and has already had a charity weekend event ‘Claws for Claws’ where the proceeds went to a cat charity, Cat Haven WA. Philanthropic, Burlesque performing Boss Lady! Go and support Kenjai and check out the Pedicure Garden in the shop – it’s amazing.

1// What is the business about? OCD + Co is the shop name and my business is called Obsessive Compulsive Dreadlocks. We specialise in creating and maintaining dreadlocks, just using a crochet hook, no wax or nasty products. We make very neat, clean dreadlocks and advise on the best aftercare to keep them looking amazing and healthy. We also share the space with Hair Mastery Perth who are an amazing hairdressing duo specialising in blondes.
2// What is unique about your business? I think what we do is very unique, there are very few salons in Perth that specialise in dreadlocks, which means we have clients from all over the state coming to see us. Keeps things fun and interesting having clients from such diverse backgrounds.
3// How did you get your idea or concept for the business? I lived in Melbourne for over 10 years, which is where I learnt my trade. I travelled between Perth and Melbourne for 4 years looking after my clientele in both states before making the move back to Perth and making it home once again. There definitely seemed to be a high demand in Perth for quality dreadlock work and we were happy to fill that gap in the market and our clients seem pretty glad that we did!
4// Why Inglewood? Beaufort Street has always been my favourite street in Perth, I think it has the coolest mix of businesses and has the best vibe and we wanted to be part of it all and add to its vibrancy. We’ve been open in Inglewood since November and are very happy! We have amazing neighbours at Cult Cosmetica, Total Brow and Hoodburger and are excited about our upcoming neighbours Clear Mind Studio. I think It’s an amazing time for Inglewood!
5// What gets you out of bed in the morning? Coffee helps, then just the excitement of what we’re doing that day!
6// What does a typical day look like for you? We try to squeeze in as much caffeine as possible before starting our days as we spend 2-3 hours minimum with most clients and up to 8 hours with some, so don’t always get a lot of breaks. There’s not really any shortcuts with what we do, so days can be quite long. On the plus side, we spend our days talking to and learning about so many amazing people, so that really helps!
7// What’s the most rewarding thing about running your own business? The freedom! Also, just being able to create something that people love and appreciate, makes all the effort worth it.
8// What’s the most surprising thing about running your own business? All the behind the scenes stuff! A lot of work goes into all the advertising and social media, to actually get to the point where you have clients in those chairs every day. Luckily, I love doing all that stuff, but is a lot more work than most people would think.
9// What’s the smartest business or life hack you use?! Scheduling posts on social media! Saves so much time and means you can have things posted at your busiest times without having to always think about it.
10// Company’s mantra? Highest quality work, each and every time.

We have been long time fans of Kasama and her food truck at the Inglewood Night Markets for the past few seasons. Nothing can beat her and the team’s enthusiasm for authentic, freshly made-to-order Thai food – all served with her trademark winning smile.
Not to rest on their laurels, Kasama and her partner Neil have over the last few weeks been setting up their first bricks and mortar shop on Beaufort Street, so we had a sit down in the ‘nearly finished’ space at 850a Beaufort Street to talk about the journey so far…
1. What’s the story so far?
Kasama’s Thai Kitchen is about three years old and there is no sign of slowing down for the pair! But Kasama’s journey with food started at a much earlier age. For Kasama’s formative years, she was raised by her grandmother (Kasama lovingly refers to her as ‘Granma’.) and she taught her to cook in a very holistic way. When she returned from school she would help her Granma in the kitchen – but she was only allowed to observe for many years. This taught Kasama that creating food dishes is creative, soulful and comes from the heart. All of Kasama’s inspiration comes from her Granma and her teachings. It has given Kasama a unique way to cook and she says it’s a “spiritual experience”.
2. Why did you choose Inglewood?
After looking around in neighbouring areas (Neil and his family have been in the Bayswater area for 25+ years) they decided upon the Inglewood Beaufort Street strip because of the regeneration of the old Bunnings site to a Woolworths, as well as its proximity to the Monday Night Markets. The area is on the up in their eyes and they want to be part of the reinvigoration and be part of the hustle and bustle.
3. What is a typical day for Kasama?
After getting a daily fresh food delivery, Kasama preps all of the food for their upcoming events. Kasama doesn’t stop thinking up ideas and dishes so she is constantly on the go! The food truck is in use up to 5 days a week and as Kasama makes everything to order, the prep work is chopping, peeling and making sauce bases from scratch every day.
4. What’s the most surprising thing about owning your own business?
Both Neil and Kasama love the freedom that comes with being your own boss. They are producing a quality food product and that takes time and effort to make sure it is perfect, every time. Kasama sometimes cooks until 3am in the mornings to cater for the 360 meals made to order in the food truck on any given night!
5. What are your business neighbours like?
Neil and Kasama have not wasted any time in introducing themselves to their neighbours; Alan the hairdresser directly opposite, Tom at Hoodburger and the neigbourly love is being reciprocated with the boys from the tattoo shop helping with the shop fit-out, Fitness 858 donating a whiteboard for the kitchen and Natalie from Vintage Hairess already having Kasama in for a little pamper! It’s safe to say that they are making themselves at home in the ‘hood!
6. What will be the food theme of the shop?
Kasama has a strong vision for the shop food – and that is to showcase her Granma’s unique Thai food. Unlike Westernised versions of Thai food, Kasama grew up in Bangkok and the food from that area is the recognised national food of the country. Granma’s style and freshness is as authentic as it gets and that may be very different to what Australians are used to!
7. Have you met any Perthanalities yet?!
While scoping out the area, Neil and Kasama were enjoying a spot of salami at Mondo’s Butchers. We all know that if Vince is in, he’d love to meet you and that’s exactly what Neil decided to do!
8. Any funny stories?
With Kasama being Thai and Neil a local Aussie boy, there is sometimes a little lost in translation moments! One such moment was when Neil was sent out for ‘coconut’ and trawled several places looking for a whole coconut. Coming back empty handed, Kasama was surprised that he couldn’t find any – so sent one of the staff out to get coconut. And soon came back with a can of coconut milk, just as Kasama wanted!
9. Just how many food trucks have you owned?
In just three short years, not long after meeting, Neil and Kasama quit their day jobs (office work and Baldivis Farm respectively) and bought a small food truck to start trading from. Kasama cooks EVERYTHING in the truck and it became apparent after one full season on the Perth food scene that a bigger truck was required! Operating for two years as a food truck vendor has made them realise that in order to cater to their growing devoted authentic Thai food fans, they need even bigger premises to cater from, and the restaurant/shop was created to fill that need. Working as a professional kitchen to cater for their food truck business, they will also have approx. 30 covers in their restaurant!

11. Favourite Kasama’s Thai Kitchen dish?
Kasama is a BIG fan of fish and eats that most of the time. The favourite of the markets is the Pad Thai, which uses authentic Bangkok ingredients and that is what differentiates it from the rest. But Kasama couldn’t choose her favourite as she loves everything that she makes. To her, they are all as good as each other.
12. What has been the best thing about starting Kasama’s Thai Kitchen?
Both Neil and Kasama have lots of people that have been huge supporters of their venture – the patrons that keep coming back for more and telling their friends to try it. But behind the scenes the best thing has been their families. Kasama’s Granma who raised her in Bangkok and shared her amazing gift with food with a young Kasama and her father who let Kasama trade a little food shop next to his aged 14. Neil’s family have been instrumental in making Kasama’s Thai Kitchen a success; supporting the talent and abilities of Kasama and even helping out in the food truck in the early days.
They opened its doors in Late March. It’s was delayed due to making sure the kitchen and fit out is as they wanted it. The site was quite messy (and very pink!) and the team have been transforming the space into a pleasant place to sit and enjoy some authentic Thai! The food truck is also being catered for, with a new paved area to the rear to call home, so paving has been put down to make sure the truck is as comfortable in its new home as the patrons will be in the restaurant area!
From looking for premises to opening in just 8 WEEKS. Amazing work guys!
What is plain to see about Kasama’s Thai Kitchen is the passion that stems from everyone involved. The boundless energy and belief in the food and HOW it has been produced. Quality and authenticity is what makes Kasama’s food different from the rest and I bet that million dollar smile will win the hearts of many an Inglewoodian along the way!
Following the recent closure of some long-standing restaurants in Highgate and Mount Lawley, it does seem to beg the question why? There are so many factors unfortunately that can have an impact on a business, from high rents, to a slowing economy that saps consumer confidence as well as a suburb just not being ‘in favour’. Sad-looking empty shops in Subiaco, Mount Lawley and Highgate are testament to some of those factors and Inglewood hasn’t been immune either but is Inglewood showing signs of bucking this trend?
We know of at least 10 new independent businesses that have opened their doors in late 2018 or are about to. Are Inglewood’s lower rents, heritage buildings and an increasingly buzzing shopping strip becoming more and more appealing to smaller businesses’ looking for the next cool suburb? Well…., maybe (and yes we are obviously biased)!
It’s pretty obvious to anyone who lives locally that the area is evolving, changing and becoming a ‘destination’. As the local community group it’s something that Inglewood On Beaufort have been working so hard on helping to achieve. Nestled between the long-standing Mount Lawley and the still-cool-but-a-little-edgy Maylands, Inglewood has long been overlooked due to the fast-paced commuters on our main road into the city. But one by one, fabulous business owners are taking advantage of the up-and-coming area.
New business owners Kasama and Neil are opening up their commercial kitchen – Kasama’s Thai Kitchen – to supply their long standing food truck and serve locals from their small front of house. They are regulars at the Monday Night Markets and the location was perfect for them, having access to loyal Market customers who travel to the event as well as locals who have already expressed a warm welcome on social media to the couple.
Brothers Matt and Tom Shaw have opened their second burger joint Hoodburger to queues and a full house most weekends. Matt told us one of the main reasons they decided upon Inglewood was the competitive rents, and the fact they are in VERY excellent company with the shops in their direct vicinity. Businesses ARE looking at Inglewood as a viable option to open up shop!
Another side to the story of our businesses on Beaufort Street are the people who have seen it all and bought the t-shirt. The stalwarts of the strip, we’re talking Vince at Mondo’s Butchers, John of John’s Gentlemen’s Hairdressing, Sean at Bonanza Paint, Murray of the Inglewood Hotel and Larry & John at New Look Dry Cleaners. These long standing businesses form the backbone of our shopping strip and bring in many loyal customers. Without a mixture of these iconic businesses as well as the ‘new blood’ it makes an incredible cross section of shopping needs.
We also have a huge number of services along the way too – let’s not forget the Tyrepower boys, the accountants, real estate and health & beauty businesses. This selection of businesses is what makes Inglewood as a shopping destination more viable and more interesting. Yes, we have empty areas at the northern end of the strip. Progress in the current financial climate is slower than anyone would hope for. But, with such quality establishments as Cecchi’s, excellent restaurant and takeaway The Jolly Good Indian, newly opened Chef & Co, and soon to open (May 2019) award winning Kustom Klaws as well as the Paleo orientated butcher Paddock + Farm all giving the Bedford end of the strip a reason to thrive, it’s surely not going to be long before people start to fill in the gaps and redevelopments begins.
And then at the other end of the strip, we have the family run, juggernaut of Three Coins and Trio, Louis spinning some of the finest coffee’s from Nexus and then, above Louis is the jawdropping foodie heaven that is 2nd Ave IGA……..and nestled in between Aldi looks like they are breaking ground soon in alignment with their late 2019 opening date. Bringing with it 2 retail spaces and a café space on site. We’re finding it hard to come up with any reasons why Beaufort Street is in trouble!
Progress in the ‘hood is a good and timely thing. The area deserves a shopping strip that is vibrant and eclectic. We have an excellent range of facilities that we can use at our disposal. Sure, it’s not as pretty as Mount Hawthorn’s Scarborough Beach Road, or have the potential ‘stroll-ability’ that you may find in Leederville’s Oxford Street, but it is accessible (thanks State Route 53!) and we do have vibrant hubs the whole way along Beaufort Street.
It’s good for the area, it’s good for the local economy and it’s good for the soul. Shopping local means that businesses get to earn a living, form relationships with all of us and we get the BEST service we can from our Strip. It’s a win-win for us all!

We all get very excited when a new business comes to our neck of the wood. And we are VERY excited about Perth’s very own cult burger outlet opening up on Beaufort St!
The Inglewood venue has been 2 years in the making (yes, you read that right, 2 years!) with lots of too-ing and fro-ing with the City of Stirling, planners and developers. Working with respected interior designers Design Theory of Freo on the fit out, Matt and his brother Tom have made sure their new burger joint will be somewhere to sit and relish. (Sorry, not sorry about the pun!)
We had a chat with Matt, Hoodburger’s own boss-man, logo maker and recipe perfecter about the ‘Wood’s newest burger hangout…
1// What’s the story? A passion for cooking has been at the heart of Hoodburger since the early days of buying a $1,300 BBQ to help supplement studying. Little did Matt know that off the back of doing pop-up events around Perth and catering to crowds of 300+ (in a 30 year old kitchen!) at Baysie Bowling Club that Hoodburger would have a bricks and mortar shop in Northbridge in 2017 and be opening a second in Inglewood – all in under 2.5 years!
2// What is unique about Hoodburger? The quality of the food. Everything is sourced from WA and painstakingly chosen for their quality. Their burger buns are a well-guarded secret! Working with the bakery, the brothers have perfected the Hoodburger bun to perfection and many competitors have asked for the recipe – unsuccessfully!
3// Tell us about the burgers? So much time and thought has gone into each burger. A small range, done to perfection is the name of the game at Hoodburger. A liquor licence (from Mid 2019) means there will be a variety of beers from local breweries chosen to compliment the burgers.
4// Where did the idea for Hoodburger come from? The name Hoodburger came from the 1997 movie Good Burger and started as a ‘one night only’ cooking burgers out the back of The Bird in Northbridge.
5// Why Inglewood? Matt: “Being surrounded by cool boutique shops in Inglewood such as Billie + Rose and La Luna made the decision to make Inglewood home easy. We are excited to be part of the new wave of businesses in that part of Inglewood.”
6// Biggest challenge converting the Inglewood site? The learning curve has been huge for the Hoodburger boys! A brand-new full refurb of the site’s old offices created its own challenges. “Working with a designer on the refit has been fun and working through the required regulations with the City has been a lengthy process, but it has been worth it to get what we want.” Having a corporate business background as well as in graphic design and hospitality, Matt has been able to draw on his experience in all of these past lives to help him create Hoodburger.
7// Best Hoodburger?! Matt: “I can’t say! Each one has been tested and tweaked to what we think is perfection. My favourite burger is a plain cheeseburger. Simple and perfectly cooked.”

10// Who will be overseeing Hoodburger Inglewood? Some of their loyal and highly skilled staff great staff are coming over from the Northbridge site, as well as brother Tom will be manager and part owner of Hoodburger Inglewood.

It’s an exciting time on our Beaufort St. strip right now. We are seeing lots of businesses choosing the Inglewood on Beaufort neighbourhood to locate their shops. This is the first in a series of blog posts welcoming our new neighbours to the ‘Wood.
This Friday (18th Jan) see’s the much anticipated new revamp of the restaurant at 1000 Beaufort St, Bedford. Chef & Co Restaurant is the brainchild of successful business owner Yvonne Khan and Chef and Co-Owner Darren King.
With Darren produces modern Australian dishes paired with excellent local wines. A variety of dishes that suit all, including a children’s menu. Spoilt for choice – see for yourself here!
Wanting to know more about them and the new business we asked co-owner Yvonne a few questions about Chef & Co:
1// Hello, my name is… Yvonne Khan.
2// What is the business about? Chef & Co has been created by Yvonne Khan (owner) and Darren King (owner/chef) Australian modern cuisine using fresh produce and local wines from the unique Swan Valley.
3// What’s your story? Having lived in Melbourne during my early years and deciding to go into Hospitality training in Hotel Management, moving to Tasmania, Alice Springs and then Perth for various roles in the industry.
My biggest achievement has been to renovate and open the award winning Padburys in Guildford which I owned for 12 years. This building use to be a co-op, then a warehouse so it was a huge renovation no running water, rewiring the whole building, no gas. The kitchen was a horse stable!
4// How do you start your day? With a good cup of coffee, I live in the Swan Valley so fortunate to live on 10 acres I also run a small Bed and Breakfast on the property so I do keep busy.
5// What does a typical day look like for you? Just not enough hours for me with the workload, but I still manage to have a decent social life.
6// Most memorable facepalm moment? I think finding out I was pregnant with Georgia was the most memorable and surprising for me.
7// What’s the most surprising thing about running your own business? I love talking to different people and ensuring they have a great experience in my venue.

10// Guilty pleasure? Chocolate and too much socializing with lots of nice wine and good friends.
